Week 5 – Beading it up

Due to concerns that were brought up at our last meeting regarding our procedure differences for our templated and non-templated beads, it was recommended that all beads produced would undergo the same processes and procedures. This made all the non-templated beads I prepared previously unusable for our jar tests so I have to make more.

while it is a pain having to redo something, it did give me a chance to create this awesome slow-motion video on our bead production.

We make our beads by loading a syringe with our acidic gel and using a syringe pump to slowly drip gel our of the needle tip which produces gel droplets. The droplets fall into a stirring base solution and basic titration precipitates our beads. The stirring motion helps keep the droplets in a spherical shape. After stirring the beads are filtered from our solution, rinsed with DI water, and allowed to air dry.

Enjoying the outdoors.
