Orientation at Rice University

The orientation at Rice University was a great opportunity to meet the other NEWT REU students and NEWT directors. I got to know Dr. Jorge Loyo, who is a great person and very helpful. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask him. Getting to know REU students  from different cultures and backgrounds was very nice. I traveled from Phoenix to Houston with other REU students for this event. This was great to get to know each other before getting to the orientation. We arrived on Sunday afternoon at Rice University. After walking for a few minutes trying to find Rice housing to check in, we finally were able to enjoy the humidity of the great city of Houston. We had a few meetings and activities during the day on Monday. We received general information about the research experience, what to expect, and how to get the most out of it. On Tuesday, we read some scientific papers to get familiarized with the formats of these types of documents, to understand what to expect when we read them, and to learn what is the best way to find these types of documents and where to search for them. Overall, the orientation gave us very good information, which was provided by NEWT staff in order for us to get started with our own research experience. We flew back to Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon.

If you want to eat at 1:00 a.m., order pizza from Domino’s.

Random person captured our group picture: priceless.
