Third Week at NEWT

In my previous blog post I mentioned that I am using Micro Bubble Aeration (MBA) to reduce fouling on the surface of MD (Membrane Distillation) membranes. Up until this point, the micro-bubbler has been pretty temperamental, but my mentor got it up and running again for the next experiments.

This week I coated my first and second membrane. For the first one, I held the spray nozzle a bit too close to the membrane I was supposed to coat which led to some larger droplets of Carbon Black beading on the surface instead of a fine and more even dispersion. I never took any photos of that one. The second membrane I coated ended up much better, and is the one depicted in the above picture. We did run this one, and it performed well which was a relief.

On Wednesday we went to the Goldwater Center for a meeting about entrepreneurship from Dr. Holman, who was once also an REU. I found this presentation really interesting, and really felt like I learned a lot about patent filing especially.
