End of Week 2 – LDH-Chitosan films presents: The Struggle

This week has been interesting.

Our Layered Double Hydroxide-Chitosan (LDH) beads and Chitosan beads were not “behaving” in FTIR so Dr. Chan suggested that we make films instead of beads to allow us to hopefully characterize our samples more accurately.

We made films with glass slides at varying thicknesses and also ran it in FTIR using a blank slide while taking the background. It didn’t go so well because the FTIR window in recessed so the signal showed interference. I have moved on to making thicker films so that we can scrape it off and be able to have an accurate analysis of our samples.

I will wait for these to dry over the weekend and see how they are doing Monday. If they dry out too thin then I will have to layer more on top until I get a decent thickness to run the sample.
