Dr. Deemer, Jorge and I had the opportunity to meet Interfe de la Frontera, a group created in the Westway Colonia which started back in 1997. Many residents moved here because they came from Juarez and couldn’t afford a better place to live. However, once they started living in Westway they realized they had no utilities but were quick to take their issues to court and protest why they didn’t have these basic necessities. They quickly learned El Paso Water had a contract to not go beyond the city limits however with persistence they were able to get water and other utilities. Their mission has been ongoing for more than 20 years and have had many accomplishments since then but they are continuing to provide more for their community and educate them.
This meeting has helped me realize that a great way we can help the Hueco Tanks colonia is to provide visibility to their problem and provide perhaps a cost analysis to bring it up to the city council. This project is not a 2 months project, it is something that can take years however, we need the support from the community and advocates for it.
