Lab Work and Tour of the El Paso Water Arsenic Treatment Plant

Patricia and I made our standards this week according to what we planned with the Rice Engineering team. We used As(V) and made dilutions to 1,2,5,10, and 15 ppb, by doing this we will hopefully be able to see a linear regression close to 15 ppb where the theoretical detection limit is at. After making our dilution series, we started to troubleshoot the potentiostat.

Furthermore, during our visit, we had the opportunity to tour the El Paso Water arsenic treatment plant. It was fascinating to learn about the impressive capabilities of our utility company in treating millions of gallons of water daily, especially when faced with varying concentrations of arsenic ranging from 10 to 100 ppb. Despite this challenge, the plant’s advanced processes enable them to consistently achieve a safe and steady arsenic concentration of 5-6 ppb in their treated water product. It was truly eye-opening to witness the dedication and technology involved in providing clean and safe drinking water to the community.
